Scrapping an incomplete car
An incomplete car can still be scrapped for the metal that's left. Cash for Scrap Junk Cars NWI buys scrap cars across north Lake County, Indiana, including shells with parts missing: tell us what's gone and the offer is set on what's there, with free towing and payment at pickup.
Can you scrap a car with parts missing?
Yes. A car with its engine, wheels or catalytic converter gone can still be scrapped for the metal that's left. Missing parts lower the weight and take away parts a recycler would sell, so the offer is lower than for a complete car. Say exactly what's missing so the offer matches the car we tow.

Stripped cars end up this way for all kinds of reasons: a project that stalled, parts sold one at a time, a theft. Whatever happened, the steel that’s left still has a value, and Cash for Scrap Junk Cars NWI prices it on what’s actually there.
How missing parts change the offer
Two things happen when a part is gone:
The car weighs less. Scrap is paid by the ton, so an engine or transmission out of the car is weight out of the offer. The curb weight on the spec sheet describes a complete car; yours is lighter.
A part a recycler would sell is gone. In the normal recycling process, the wheels, tires, battery and catalytic converter come off first, and serviceable engines and transmissions may be pulled and sold. If they’re already missing, that value is missing too.
Neither makes the car worthless. Most of a car’s weight is its body and frame, and that’s steel either way.
Describe what’s gone
The more exact you are, the less the number moves at pickup. When we call back, run through this list:
- Engine: there, gone, or there but seized?
- Transmission: in the car or out?
- Catalytic converter: still on, or cut off?
- Wheels and tires: all four on, some off, or sitting on blocks?
- Body panels, doors, hood, seats: anything removed?
- Loose parts: are there parts from this car stacked nearby that should go with it?
Before you pull more parts
If the car is still mostly complete and you’re thinking of stripping it to sell parts, run the numbers first. Pulled parts take time to sell, and the shell you’re left with is worth less by the ton. Our guide on scrapping a car or selling it whole covers when parting out pays and when it doesn’t.
Pickup for a car that won’t roll
Incomplete cars often can’t roll: no wheels, a missing axle, locked brakes. That’s fine, but it changes how the car is loaded, so mention it. The tow is still free, and you’re still paid at pickup.

Free towing. Paid at pickup. No title? We can still help. Indiana scrap sales need either the title or a BMV certificate of authority, and we'll work out which one on the call.
Questions
Will you take a car with no engine?
Tell us it has no engine when you send the details. A car without its engine weighs less and the offer reflects that, but the rest of the steel still counts.
The car has no wheels. Can it still be towed?
Say so up front. A car with no wheels loads differently, and knowing ahead of time means the right truck turns up.
Someone stole the catalytic converter. Is the car still worth scrapping?
Yes, for its metal. The converter's absence lowers the offer, which is why we ask about it before pickup instead of discovering it in your driveway.
