Where pickup stops
This matters, so we’ll say it plainly. We don’t pick up in Porter County or LaPorte County, and we don’t pick up in south Lake County: no Crown Point, Schererville, Dyer, St. John, Cedar Lake or Lowell. If your car is in one of those places, we’re not the right call.
How the price is built here
There’s nothing special about a Lake County ton of steel. The price follows the same three steps anywhere:
- Weight. The car’s curb weight, turned into tons. Our weight guide shows where to find it.
- Rate. The buyer’s current per-ton rate for whole cars, which follows what steel mills pay for scrap. Ask whether it’s per gross ton (2,240 lb) or net ton (2,000 lb).
- Deductions. Missing engine, wheels or catalytic converter. Towing is the other common one, and ours is free.
Getting around for pickup
The area is threaded with expressways: the Indiana Toll Road (I-90) along the lakeshore, the Borman Expressway (I-80/94) through the middle, and I-65 running south from Gary past Merrillville. Surface routes do the local work: Indianapolis Boulevard (US 12/20/41) and Calumet Avenue (US 41) in Hammond, Cline Avenue (SR 912) through East Chicago, Broadway through Gary and Merrillville, and US 30 across Merrillville’s south side.
For the pickup itself, the house number and street are usually enough. Hammond’s streets run on a grid much like Chicago’s, and Whiting, Munster and Highland use Hammond’s house numbering, while East Chicago counts east and west from its canal. If the car is behind a building, in a shared lot or down a gravel drive, add a landmark.

Whiting sits on the lake beside Hammond and shares its street numbering. Munster and Highland lie south of Hammond, both on the Hammond system. Griffith borders Gary and Merrillville. Hobart borders Merrillville to the northeast. Lake Station borders Gary’s Miller Beach neighborhood, and New Chicago is covered too.
